Dear Parents,
Wow, even though it was short by a day, this first week of camp was action-packed!
Tuesday:
Today, July 5, was the first day of Camp Avraham Moshe 2011!
And what an amazing first day it was! We kicked off the morning with spirited T’fillot and then played our famous "Name Game" song with over 60 people, which is a new Camp Avraham Moshe (CAM) record! We then got to know each other better with some "Ice-Breakers," which were followed by an electrifying "Fun and Discovery with Bubbles" activity in which our campers got the chance to become human bubbles! After lunch we had an energetic sports activity with Nechama and decorated welcome cookies, which tasted oh so good. We capped off the day with our closing circle saying the Shehecheyanu prayer which commemorated the beginning to an amazing summer ahead. We closed with our two favorite camp songs, “Thank you God” and “Rosa Rosa.” We can’t wait for Carnival Day tomorrow! Thank you CAM Counselors and Campers for an incredible start to the summer!
Wednesday:
Carnival Day was one to remember at Camp Avraham Moshe. Our amazing counselors came dressed up as clowns, lions, tigers, and bears... oh my! Campers also came dressed for the festivities as kings, queens, and jesters. No costume? No problem! The face painter transformed campers into different animals and more. Wacky carnival booths included shaving balloons, knocking down pins, and pin the tail on the donkey (huge thank you to Jacob Katz for running that booth). Probably everybody’s favorite booth was the one where they got to throw a sponge at the camp director's face! Everyone loved the cotton candy machine and popcorn maker, and the huge moon bounce truly made our carnival come to life! Then we had an amazing hot dog lunch, and todah rabah to the Saour family for providing a beautiful and delicious birthday cake in honor of Penina’s 23rd birthday. After lunch we enjoyed swimming for the first time this summer, which was so refreshing and complemented our morning activities so beautifully! At our closing circle one of our campers led the Camp Avraham Moshe cheer for the first time in his life, which is a testament to the warmth and love felt at camp. Can you believe we are only two days into the summer? We cannot wait to take on the California Science Center tomorrow for our first field trip. We are all looking forward to another fabulous day!

From the archives -- what campers said about the carnival last year:
Sarah Esther: "I dressed up as a cowgirl. I played at the carnival and then we had a water fight."
Navid: "Oh yeah! I messed around and threw flour at the counselors. I threw bean bags into the poster board."
Penina: "My favorite part was the prizes. I played the toss the ball game and then I got prizes at the carnival."
Megan: "I shaved off the cream from the balloons. I dressed up as a witch."
Thursday:
We've just completed our third day and it feels like we've been together at camp for a whole summer! There is nothing like the scene of 60 people, counselors and campers alike, wearing their aqua blue Camp Avraham Moshe t-shirts in preparation for our first adventure outside of Vista Del Mar, to the California Science Center. We kicked off the morning with energized T'fillot. Our song session after T'fillot was enhanced by celebrating the birthdays of Yael Mellon and Ariel Chernofsky. We love getting a chance to share milestones with our campers and counselors and look forward to more celebrations as the summer goes on. The positive energy carried over to an amazing experience at the California Science Center where our campers jumped from one exhibit to another with ease and excitement. This was a great kickoff to our exciting summer field trips and we cannot believe that Shabbos is already here! Looking forward to a fabulous Friday ahead.

From the archives: We went to the CSC last year too, where we saw the coolest "Under the Sea" 3D IMAX movie and we got to meet BUZZ ALDRIN! Buzz was kind enough to chat with us and take some photos!
Friday:
Fridays are truly the most special time of the week at Camp Avraham Moshe. It's almost as if the Shabbos queen greets us early. Our first day of challah baking went so well and our chessed (kindness) project on friendship helped our community grow. Every week on Friday we'll be exploring an aspect of the theme of Veahavta Lireacha Kamocha: loving your friend like you love yourself, and doing good deeds for one another. This week's project was making friendship bracelets! We then enjoyed a pizza lunch -- a Friday tradition -- and we were so lucky to have a legend in the Jewish music world, Brad Schachter, lead us in an amazing Shabbos party! We thank Brad so much for volunteering his time each summer to help bring Shabbos to life for everyone at camp. We also added a little spice to the day by declaring it Western Day -- yee-haw! We closed the day with our famous Yasher Koach awards and everyone left with an award for an amazing first week of camp.
Have a Good Shabbos / Shabbat Shalom!
Love, Josh & Leah
