At ETTA, we believe art is more than just a creative outlet—it’s a powerful tool for self-expression, communication, and personal growth, especially for those we support with intellectual and developmental disabilities. We’ve seen firsthand how creativity can spark confidence, foster independence, and bring people together in meaningful ways.
Why Art Matters for the Disability Community
Art gives individuals with disabilities a safe space to express themselves, often in ways words cannot. Through painting, crafting, and other creative activities, our participants can express their emotions, ideas, and unique perspectives (The Arc). Artistic expression also enhances fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination (Integrity Inc.), and emotional and cognitive development (National Endowment for the Arts). More than that, it builds social connections—bringing people together to collaborate, support one another, and celebrate their talents (Covey). We’ve seen how art reduces stress and boosts confidence, giving individuals a sense of pride in their work (LSA Homes). That’s why we’re so committed to creating opportunities for our participants to explore their creativity.
Bringing Creativity to Life at ETTA
At ETTA, we love finding new ways to spark creativity! Our #ArtFridays, part of the CONNECTIONS program, are filled with hands-on projects like painting with different techniques, crafting Hanukkah menorahs, and experimenting with mixed media. In our group homes, residents have created stunning personalized pieces by painting their favorite images onto canvas and adding a colorful touch with buttons. Watching their faces light up as they bring their artistic visions to life is truly inspiring.
We also love shaking things up with unconventional materials—like using straws instead of brushes to create vibrant floral artwork or layering colorful sand for textured masterpieces. We’ve even crafted multi-wicked Havdalah candles, blending tradition with artistic exploration. These projects do more than just spark creativity; they help improve motor skills, patience, and focus, all while offering a fun and therapeutic way to express emotions (GIV Care).
Rebecca’s Artistic Journey
One of our shining stars is Rebecca, who has been part of ETTA’s Supported Living Services for over eight years. She has a deep passion for art, and thanks to her classes at L.A. Goal, she has mastered various techniques and created incredible works of art. We were beyond thrilled when three of her pieces were featured in the “IN THE GROOVE” art exhibit —including her stunning fabric piece, “Toes in the Sand,” which was sold (marked by the coveted red dot)!
Rebecca’s enthusiasm is contagious. “I love L.A. Goal! You get to learn new things… you can learn how to embroider,” she shared. Alexa, one of our dedicated team members who has supported Rebecca for the past three years, has witnessed her growth firsthand:
“Working with Rebecca has been a truly rewarding experience. She is an exceptionally talented and creative individual, exhibiting remarkable resilience. Her dedication to personal growth and her willingness to confront new challenges, despite any initial reservations, have been truly inspiring to witness.”
We are so proud of Rebecca and all she has accomplished, and we can’t wait to see what she creates next!
The Power of Art at ETTA
At ETTA, we know that art is so much more than just painting or crafting—it’s about self-discovery, connection, and confidence. The creativity we foster within our programs enhances the lives of our participants in ways that go beyond the canvas. We are honored to provide a space where the people we serve can explore their artistic talents, share their stories, and be celebrated for who they are. Together, we are painting a brighter, more inclusive future—one masterpiece at a time.
